New Music Collective presents Mark Lockett at CPIT Jazz School
New Music Collective has some more great music to keep you distracted from the wintry cold of July!
Mark Lockett Trio (Melb/Syd) - Sneaking Out After Midnight CD Launch.
Drummer/composer Mark Lockett recently travelled to NYC to record some of his latest compositions with New York heavy weights saxophonist Joel Frahm and double bassist Orlando le Fleming.
The concept behind the original compositions are largely inspired by Lockett’s love for the wonderful music of American alto saxophonist and ‘giant of jazz’, Ornette Coleman, particularly the music he created with Don Cherry, Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell. Lockett has also drawn upon his extensive time spent studying with a younger and, some might say, more modern New York heavyweight, Ari Hoenig. The fusion of these two influences led Lockett to write a series of themes and melodies that became the basis of this, his latest release titled ‘Sneaking Out After Midnight’ (Rattle Records).
“Drummer/composer Mark Lockett shines in his new trio recording” Mike Nock, March 2012
This concert celebrates the New Zealand launch of Lockett’s fourth album Sneaking Out After Midnight. For this performance Lockett will be joined by well-acquainted colleagues Julien Wilson (sax) and Alex Boneham (bass).

The Silhouette of Mr Pink 8.30pm
Like any silhouette The Silhouette of Mr Pink is most interesting at its edges. One can only imagine the terribly fiendish and crafty individual the silhouette represents – Mr Pink! Thank Zeus we will bear witness to only the silhouette on this draughty and intoxicating evening!
It began with flautist Tamara dusting off compositions she wrote over a decade ago while living in Paris, inspired by the images and various characters she happened upon the way...
The Silhouette of Mr Pink opened for New Music Collective’s two day jazz festival in Christchurch called “Jazz Slam” in November 2011 and the piece “The Silhouette of Mr Pink” was recently featured in an interview with Tamara on the “Jazz Footprints” show on Radio National.
Tamara, with fellow New Music Collective organisers Mike Story and Chris Burke, revisit these quirky compositions and add in some new flavours to the mix.
