Terror Of The Deep and The Flying Sourcerers at Darkroom next Friday
For one night only, two Wellington bands, Terror of the Deep and The Flying Sorcerers, perform in Christchurch under one roof, for free!
Terror of the Deep initially began in 2008 as the solo project of Oliver Dixon (guitar, vocals), however with the addition of Taipua Adams (Sheitgeist, Special Olympics) on bass and backing vocals in 2009 and William Daymond (The Pickups, Axemen) on drums and backing vocals in 2010, Terror of the Deep became a fully fledged band.
The last time Terror of the Deep visited Christchurch was in 2009, and since then they have released two critically acclaimed albums (2010's Airport Underneath The Dome and 2011's Permanent Weekend) and are currently in the process of mixing a new E.P. that will be released later this year. Here's what some local and overseas reviewers have had to say about the band:
"...this is heavenly stuff." - Inpress Magazine, Melbourne.
"One of the 10 great NZ band you should know" - Flavorwire, New York.
"...masters of the classic tight-collared pop melody." - Impose Magazine, New York.
"...unbeatable New Zealand garage...irresistible pop hooks...More please. Recommended!" - Volcanic Tongue, Glasgow, Scotland.
"...bright, lush, upbeat but a bit melancholy NZ guitar pop...an instant classic...done in classic NZ fashion but not trying to make good on any past scene glory." - Night People Records, Iowa.
"...a new, creative band simply *happening*, the kind of indie-rock that makes you temporarily forget what a festering cesspool indie rock is and just smile in fleeting amazement." - Stereo Sancity, London.
"...varying degrees of success...while I understand the transmission that is being sent, I’m not too sure that I’m buying it...it’s hard to gauge the sincerity of the uniqueness presented here...ultimately left me a bit confused." - NZ Musician Magazine.
The Flying Sorcerers, on the other hand, are a reasonably new band that formed in early 2011 and comprise of Paul Glubb (The Steffan van Soest Hit Machine), William Daymond (The Pickups, Axemen) and Margaret Gordon. They recorded two E.P's worth of material in December last year, the first of which, The Self Fulfilling Prophecy of The Flying Sorcerers, is currently being mixed and mastered and should be released within the next few months.
