The Isaac Theatre Royal in partnership with ASB is pleased to offer the ASB Performing Arts Community Grant in support of locally created performing Arts in Christchurch, through a subsidised venue rental grant.

The Isaac Theatre Royal is a unique and multi-purpose venue and has been the Christchurch home to many of the national performing arts companies of New Zealand, as well as the preferred venue for International touring productions.

Rising star Candice Milner, one of the youngest recipients of the $10,000 Wildcard Funding Chart grant for June 2015 from NZ On Air Music at the age of only 16, will release her winning single ‘Run for It’ at an event at Wunderbar Lyttelton, New Zealand on Friday 29 January.

The Drum Festival is a celebration of rhythm, beat and dance from around the globe. A dedicated drum festival set in lush surroundings beside the Okuti River on Banks Peninsula. This year’s festival line-up includes cultural drum groups performing rhythms from Africa, Asia, the Middle East and South America plus drum and dance workshops and evening camp-fire tribal drumming.

Definitely a great place to start if you are looking to break into alternative radio with your next single or album. Each station will generally also host a range of specialist shows which will support multiple genres of music.

Entries are now open for the Taite Music Prize. The Taite Music Prize is an annual music prize awarded for the best album from New Zealand.The prize is named after respected New Zealand music journalist and broadcaster Dylan Taite, who died in 2003. The Taite Music Prize was established in 2009 in his honour by Independent Music New Zealand (IMNZ) in conjunction with the Taite family. The Taite takes its inspiration from successful international prizes such as the Mercury Prize in the UK and the Australian Music Prize.

After a 10 year absence from the Christchurch music scene, seminal metal act Grief return to the stage. Grief played regularly around Christchurch and NZ during the late 90’s, and the band were well known for their groove laden heavy sound. You can catch them with Lebowski and Neutralizer at Churchill’s late this month.

Groovefest is an annual rock n roll event showcasing the best up and coming NZ bands from North to South. Growing bigger each year, 2016 is proving to be the biggest show yet as 'Groovefest 4' brings some great acts to their stage. This year’s Christchurch event will be headlined by His Masters Voice and also feature a great selection of Christchurch talent including Pieces of Molly and Stonehurst.

The Haze have just released their debut album "Bound Together" on Bandcamp and CD. After 6 years of dedication and hard work playing originals and covers at venues of all shapes and sizes around Canterbury, The Haze took time out this year to write, record and mix their debut album “Bound Together”. The group started out as a covers band at Heaton Intermediate playing classic rock, but rapidly added originals to their set list. This album marks the end of their school years at St Andrews College and Christchurch Boys High.

Once again in February 2016, Fly My Pretties will play the magnificent Isaac Theatre Royal in Christchurch! This time Fly My Pretties are stepping it up, with support from Tiki Taane and an epic after party upstairs in the theatre. Fly My Pretties will assemble a 15 strong cast of new rising stars mixed with talent from all five previous incarnations. Christchurch heavy rockers Stonehurst have been selected to open for Zakk Wylde’s “Black Label Society’ at their upcoming show. The band has been busy recording recently with an international producer at Neil Finns Roundhead Studios, and have a new single “Can’t Get Away” out now.

NZ On Air final Making Tracks funding recipients for the year have just been announced. 24 successful applicants received music grants including Christchurch rock band Decades. NZ On Air offices will be closed from the 24th of December until the 11th of January. You are still able to submit Making Tracks applications during this time and they will be included in the next funding round which closes Monday 1st February 2016 at 5pm.


Phil Parkes is an indie pop-rock singer songwriter based in Christchurch.  Phil has recently released the second single from his forthcoming EP “There Is Nothing In My Head.”
