Trials
Charlotte Ivey and Harley Williams are 'The Tiny Lies', a New Zealand Alt-Folk act. Described as having a "twisted gentleness" embodied in their music, the duo tend to write about love, loss, and the infinite grey areas in between. REVIEWS The debut EP from Christchurch alt-folk act The Tiny Lies is unobtrusively lovely, offering a kaleidoscope of emotions surrounding love, loss and the many shades of grey that exist in between. Comprising Harley Williams on acoustic guitar and Charlotte Ivey on harmonica, both sing and each has a unique vocal appeal – Williams a matter-of-fact reverential rasp while Ivey projects a beatific angel-falling-to-earth vibe. Trials is well titled. Their studio is rubble, they've battled illness and earthquake-related disasters disasters to get this out. Recorded at Ivey's lounge in her flat in Phillipstown over three days by Ben Edwards, the sound is exquisite; reverential rustles, plinks and the merest wail of lap steel say a lot in an elegantly understated fashion. Elsewhere they scribble outside the lines with joy. Collaborators include “Redwolf” Grenell (ex Shapeshifter) on drums, Anita Clark (Devilish Mary and the Holy Rollers) offers otherworldly moments on I Am A Ghost, The Eastern's Jesse Shanks on acerbic workout Unspeak, John Sanchez-Lloyd on accordion and voodoo magician Delaney Davidson. The EP is intertwined with clever nuances and the kinds of observations only instruments and those who have experienced tough times can accurately make. It is art embraced with both hands. Vicki Anderson – The Press "Together they have created a poignant blend of folk and country on this debut EP. Each track is charmingly world-weary, combining haunting, gentle harmonies and smidgens of harmonica with lyrics of love and loss." Amy Maclaine - NZ Musician Magazine "Somewhere in these gentle alt-country tunes lies all the weariness and despair of tribulation, but also the warmth and affirmation of friendship and collegiality." Jeff Harford - Otago Daily Times credits released 01 September 2011 Recorded over three days at Ivey's house. Mixed and recorded by Lukas Theilmann. Mastered by CJ Jacobson.
